Behind the Scenes: The Inspiring Story of How Simply Spoken Began
Simply Spoken was founded in October 2020 while I was recovering from a brain injury caused by a pharmaceutical drug. During that time, I began to feel as though my life and my ability to run a business were over. Each day became increasingly difficult for me to carry out everyday tasks, like cooking or simply being a mom to my two children. My energy levels were low, and my spirit was even lower. I struggled to find a purpose, especially when just getting out of bed felt like a challenge.
How I used my Business to Cope
To cope, I became very active on YouTube and in Facebook groups, which supported me. I reached out to others who were experiencing struggles similar to mine. Not only did I receive support, but I was also able to give back, which was an incredibly uplifting experience. In 2019, I decided to create a Facebook group and a YouTube channel to help others as I navigated my journey. It became apparent how essential it was for people to connect; through these groups, I made friends who helped me persevere through my darkest days. I am grateful to say that I am here today, and I attribute much of my recovery to the kind, simple words shared in those groups. I wanted to pay that kindness forward, and that’s how the name “Simply Spoken” came to be. I believe that small words can have a profound impact on how someone perceives themselves and their circumstances.
I began making warrior bracelets—stretch beaded bracelets that meant the world to me. I crafted these bracelets to give to others, helping them feel valued, because going through a pharmaceutical injury or a difficult period often leads to the loss of relationships. People you once cherished may drift away, prompting you to form a new kind of family. I observed how my bracelets, adorned with simple yet powerful words, changed how individuals felt about themselves and their situations. While I couldn’t alleviate their symptoms, I could bring a bit of light to their struggles. This realization taught me that life’s most significant moments often stem from small acts of kindness. I wanted my warrior bracelets to empower others, reminding them that they are true warriors.
As I started to improve, I wanted to share uplifting words on various products such as apparel, drinkware, keychains, and tote bags. Each time I created items featuring empowering and inspirational messages, it filled me with joy, and I hoped my products would evoke that same feeling in others. Many of my items focus on important causes, including mental health, breast cancer awareness, autism awareness, and inspirational messages.
I am also inspired by my 10-year-old son, who underwent chemotherapy for a brain tumor at the age of three, and my mom, a three-time cancer survivor. Their experiences have significantly influenced my business.
